Around five thousand people in Sapno near the northeastern Bosnian town of Tuzla on Monday embarked on a Peace March to Srebrenica in eastern Bosnia where they will take part on 11 July in a commemoration on the 18th anniversary of the genocide committed in 1995 by Bosnian Serbs against Bosniaks in that town.
The march will pass down a 78-km path along which Bosniaks from Srebrenica tried to break through to safety on territory under the control of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina after the town had fallen to the Bosnian Serbs.
US Ambassador to Bosnia Patrick Moon, who is also taking part in the march, said that he was doing so because the victims of Srebrenica deserve to be remembered always. This is an opportunity to once again say what happened during those horrible days in 1995 and pay tribute to the victims, he said.
Officials from Bosnia's Federation entity confirmed today that during the commemoration on July 11, the remains of 409 Bosniak victims would be laid to rest.
Amongst those to be buried is the body of a baby girl who died immediately after being born due to lack of medical care at the Dutch UNPROFOR camp.
The oldest victim to be buried was 76 at the time of his death.
To date, 5,657 Srebrenica victims have been buried at the Potocari memorial park. Available data indicate that more than 8,300 people were killed after Srebrenica fell to the Serbs in July 1995.
