The leader of the Croatian Association of Trade Unions (HUS), Ozren Matijasevic, said in Osijek on Sunday that unions had so far collected 95 percent of signatures needed to call a referendum against government-sponsored changes to labour legislation and called on citizens again to support the unions' signature-collecting drive.

Speaking to reporters in downtown Osijek, where signatures were being collected for the referendum campaign, Matijasevic said that one of the unions' future activities would be changing "the overly strict regulations of the Referendum Act."

Another union leader, Vilim Ribic, said that unions would resume negotiations with the government once the referendum campaign was completed.

The unions' signature-collecting drive was launched on June 9 and lasts until June 23.
