About 500 boats on Sunday formed a line along the 2.5 km long route of a planned bridge between the mainland and the Peljesac peninsula in southern Croatia in an effort to encourage the authorities to continue construction of the Peljesac bridge.

The action was organised by an association campaigning for the construction of the bridge and was hailed by several thousand local residents. The bridge would bypass a small stretch of the coast at Neum where Bosnia and Herzegovina has access to the Adriatic Sea and would ensure Croatia's territorial continuity.

The association said in a statement that the construction of the bridge would resolve the problem of isolation of the southernmost part of Croatia from the rest of the country. It strongly condemned recent statements by senior state officials about the possibility of ceding a portion of the Croatian territory to Bosnia and Herzegovina, stressing that in that case the south of Croatia would remain forever cut off from the rest of the country and construction of the bridge would be impossible.
