I am very satisfied with the the Hague tribunal's acquittal which means that our generals were innocent but it also requires further responsibility of the country to investigate what had happened and to penalise crimes, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said on Friday commenting on the ICTY acquittal of Croatian generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac.

"Generals Gotovina and Markac were innocent and they spent eight years in prison. This fact is not easy on them or their families, but they did it for Croatia and I, as the supreme army commander, want to thank them for the sacrifice they made for their country," Josipovic said.

The ICTY Appeals Chamber earlier today acquitted generals Gotovina and Markac and ordered their immediate release.
