The first of the 15 protests announced throughout Croatia for Saturday, organised via Facebook, was held in Cakovec in the morning, followed by protests in Virovitica and Djakovo, with a small turnout.

About 100 protesters rallied in Cakovec's main square, demanding the government step down and early elections. They later threw toilet paper rolls at the building of the county branch of the ruling HDZ party.

About 50 protesters gathered at the anti-government rally in Virovitica around 2 pm, shouting "Everyone to the streets" and "Jaco, go away" - a reference to Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor, and carrying banners which said, "HDZ - criminal organisation", "Let's unite and change our tomorrow" and "Enough of the HDZ's tyranny and plunder".

The protesters in Virovitica also lit candles and observed a minute's silence for the victims of the recent disaster in Japan.

The protest in Djakovo drew only about 20 people who were shouting "Jaco, go away".
