The areas downstream from Zagreb to Sisak are currently threatened the most by floods, with the flood wave having broken through dikes along the Sava River at several places, Drazen Budisic of the Flood Protection Service said on Monday afternoon.
The water level of the Sava River upstream from Zagreb, in the area of Zagreb and in Rugvica, southeast of Zagreb, has been falling, but downstream from Zagreb it has been rising, said Budisic.
Floods are threatening settlements in the eastern part of Zagreb County and the western part of Sisak County. The villages of Sop Bukevski, Bukevje, Lekneno, Susa, Vrbovo, Drnek, Orle, Ruca and Struzec are on alert and their residents will be evacuated if necessary, said Budisic.
The flood wave is expected to fall more slowly in the area of Sisak, which means that flood protection measures will be in force in the next few days, Budisic said, adding that the threat of flooding would be the biggest in the next two-three days, after which the crest wave would move away from Sisak further east to Novska and Jasenovac.
Downstream from Sisak, there is a retention basin in Lonjsko Polje and it will be used to relieve some of the flood water and diminish the flood threat to Jasenovac, said Budisic.
Croatian army members were deployed in Orle municipality in Zagreb County to help the local population fight the floods, and they were also expected to be sent to Sisak-Moslavina County.
Sisak Mayor Dinko Pintaric said that the water level of the Kupa, Sava and Odra rivers was being monitored, adding that it was still below the critical level, and that for the time being there was no need to evacuate people from the settlements closest to the rivers.
