Former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader was visited in a Salzburg prison on Wednesday by his defence team from Zagreb, which confirmed that Sanader had confirmed before a judge in charge that he agreed to being extradited to Croatia.

"There is no dispute that our client wants to return to Croatia and he said so before the judge. We are now waiting for the Austrian justice minister's signature and for the technical preparation and organisation of his transfer, which takes time," counsel Goran Suic told reporters.

He said he did not know when the transfer could take place.

"We have been told that it takes between seven and 15 days after the justice minister's signature," he said, adding Sanader and the defence team were preparing a "very active defence".

Croatia requested Sanader's extradition from Austria on charges of abuse of office and corruption.
