Austrian Hirscher wins World Cup Zagreb men's slalom

Austrian Marcel Hirscher on Sunday won the sixth edition of the World Cup men's slalom on Mount Sljeme, while the best Croatian skier Ivica Kostelic finished as the eighth.

Hirscher, who also won the "Vip Snow Trophy" on the Sljeme slope last year, was followed by Swede Andre Myhrer, and by Mario Matt of Austria who came third today.

Hirscher now tops both the overall rankings and the slalom standings.

The men's race on Mount Sljeme attracted some 14,000 spectators, including to Croatian officials such as Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic and several cabinet ministers and other public figures.

The event was televised on Eurosport Asia, Eurosport International and ESPN Latin and South America, the organisers reported. Thus, the race was broadcast in 25 countries.

The winner of the World Cup Zagreb Women's Slalom race this past Friday was the U.S. skier Mikaela Shiffrin and Swedish Frida Hansdotter finished as the second. Canadian Erin Mielzynski was third. That floodlit slalom on Mountain Sljeme overlooking the Croatian capital was televised live in 22 countries with reports and other forms of coverage provided in some more countries worldwide.
