The head of the Croatian People's Party (HNS), Radimir Cacic, issued a statement on Tuesday after attending the first hearing before a local court in Kaposvar, Hungary, for a fatal traffic accident he had caused last year.
Cacic said he was confident that many things that had been said in public were now clarified and that it could be seen that all along he had been telling the truth.
The Kaposvar County Court held the first hearing in the case of a traffic accident involving Cacic. The accident occurred on a motorway leading to Budapest on 8 January 2010 when Cacic hit a car driven by Katalin Liptak. As a result of the injuries suffered, her 60-year-old husband Gyoergy Liptak died two days later and her mother Imrene Antal, aged 81, died in hospital about 10 days later.
"I am glad that media also had a chance to attend this hearing and I am confident that many things that have been said in public are now clear. It is evident that I have been telling the truth throughout this process," Cacic said.
Cacic thanked the Hungarian judiciary for the fair conduct of the proceedings and again expressed great regret about what had happened. "Damages to the family of the victims will be set as part of the regular process, and if the amount proves inadequate, I will certainly personally get involved in the process," he said.
