The chairwoman of the parliamentary legislation committee, Social Democratic Union (SDP) MP Ingrid Anticevic Marinovic, on Thursday declined to comment on whether there would be any amendments to the bill regulating judicial cooperation with the EU in criminal matters, adding that consultations were still under way regarding the bill.
Replying to reporters in the Sabor whether Croatia could expect some form of sanctions from the European Union if the government adopted the bill as proposed, Anticevic Marinovic said it was necessary to wait until tomorrow as more will be known then, after certain consultations are held but she would not specify what sort of consultations were being held.
Asked about a possible constitutional amendment that political assassinations would not be subject to statute of limitations, she said that this was a good initiative because the graveness of these crimes needed to be raised to a constitutional level.
She refuted allegations by opposition parties that the SDP had released news of the possible constitutional amendment just to calm the current controversy over the bill on judicial cooperation.
She stressed that it was the SDP's duty and responsibility to adopt laws and even amendments to the constitution which will not be motivated by individual cases or pressure to withdraw some bills because the law may refer to certain people or groups. "We create laws for everyone", she said.
