A former Croatian military police commander, who has been found guilty of war crimes, was arrested on Saturday morning after being on the run since 2004, the police in the southern coastal city of Split confirmed.
Miljenko Bajic, 44, former commander of a military police intervention platoon, was arrested in Zezevica near Omis, 30 kilometres south of Split, at 7am on Saturday. He was to be transferred to Split's Bilice prison in the course of the morning.
Three years ago the Supreme Court upheld a 2004 Split County Court verdict sentencing him to six years in prison for war crimes against civilians in the Lora military prison.
Two more convicted war criminals from the same case are still on the run -- Emilio Bungur and Tomislav Duic.
Josip Bikic, who had been found guilty and sentenced to four years' imprisonment, turned himself in towards the end of 2008.
Seven people in all were found guilty of war crimes in Lora. Former prison commander Tomislav Duic and his deputy Tonci Vrkic were sentenced to eight years, Davor Banic received seven years, and Miljenko Bajic, Emilio Bungur, Ante Gudic and Andjelko Botic were each given six years.
