The newly-established "Council for Croatia - No to the EU," which gathers non-parliamentary parties, associations and individuals on Thursday submitted a motion to the State Election Commission requesting to take part in the supervision of the upcoming referendum on Croatia's accession to the European Union.
The Council introduced itself to the public as a political force whose goal is to protect Croatia's sovereignty and asks from those in charge equal terms in a public discussion on Croatia's possible EU accession.
The Council comprises 12 political parties, including the Croatian Party of Rights and the Croatian Pure Party of Rights, and nine associations and unofficial citizens groups.
The Council said the lack of a public discussion and the non-transparency of the accession negotiations indicated that the elites in power were hiding from the public the real truth about the EU and the consequences of accession.
