Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly representative Johanna Shicker on Friday presented Cres Mayor Kristijan Jurjak with the Council's Flag of Honour, which was awarded to the town on the northern Adriatic island of Cres.
The Flag of Honour is the second highest award the Parliamentary Assembly gives to towns in CoE member countries for their activities on the international front and efforts to strengthen European unity and create close relations between Europe's citizens.
Croatian Parliament Speaker Josip Leko attended the presentation ceremony, saying Cres was awarded for nurturing the European spirit and cooperation as well as dialogue with other European towns.
This is a big honour and a source of pride for Cres and Croatia can be proud of Cres, he said, adding that strengthening ties between local authorities in different states on joint projects was one of the fundamental principles of the CoE's activity.
Cres cooperates with several towns in Italy, Austria and Germany, and is twinned with Motta di Livenza and Comacchio in Italy.
Cres is also implementing a local development pilot project in Southeast Europe as part of which a development strategy is to be adopted by 2013.
