The European Handball Federation has awarded the 2014 Women's European Handball Championships to the Croatian-Hungarian joint bid, the EHF decided on Saturday in Vienna

Croatia and Hungary had submitted a bid to host a European Championship before, but for the UEFA 2012 Euro Championships - which was later awarded to Poland and the Ukraine.

This time around, the Croatian-Hungarian bid was competing with Turkey and Slovakia, and came out on top.
'This is going to be one of the best tournaments in the history of women's handball as the federations have experience with tournaments of the highest level. In addition, both countries have a long tradition of women's handball,' said EHF chief Tor Lian.
Although Croatia has plenty of venues which were built for the 2009 Men's World Handball Championships, the only Croatian arenas to be used are those in Zagreb and Varazdin, while the Hungarian cities of Gyor (where an arena has yet to be constructed), Debreceni and Budapest will host in Hungary.
