Croatia has adopted a decision recognising the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces as the only legitimate representative of the Syrian people, the Foreign Ministry said on its website on Friday.
"Croatia believes that the Coalition will contribute to creating the foundations for a political transition in Syria, which will then lead to the creation of conditions for the development of Syria as a democratic state that will respect the fundamental human and civil rights," the ministry said in a statement.
"Croatia expresses its concern about the continued dramatic escalation of violence in Syria and the precarious humanitarian situation of the civilian population, as well as about the great number of refugees in the neighbouring states," the statement said.
It added that "Croatia also strongly supports the UN and the Arab League special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi in his efforts to initiate a peace process and seek a political solution to the crisis in Syria on the basis of the Geneva agreements."
"We hold the coordination of all the international factors key to resolving the crisis in Syria in order to stop the violence as soon as possible and prevent further humanitarian disaster and possible detrimental effects on the region at large," the ministry said.
