Croatian Defence Minister Ante Kotromanovic left for The Hague on Friday morning to meet with Croatian generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac after they were acquitted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) of war crimes committed during the 1991-1995.
On board a government plane, Kotromanovic was accompanied by General Gotovina's wife and son. They were all due to return to Zagreb in the afternoon.
Markac's lawyer Goran Mikulic told Croatian Television (HTV) that after the court hearing in the morning the two generals were taken back to the ICTY's detention centre in the Hague district of Scheveningen and were to be released after the completion of the necessary procedures, which could take three to four hours.
Markac's family had arrived in The Hague earlier to attend the court hearing.
