Dodik announces referendum on Dayton Agreement

Bosnian Serb Prime Minister Milorad Dodik has announced the launching of a procedure on holding a referendum on the Dayton Agreement in Republika Srpska in the first half of this year.

Dodik also announced a possible referendum on the status of RepublikaSrpska, Belgrade-based Vecernje Novosti daily reported on Sunday.

Dodik said in an interview that High Representative Valentin Inzko was toldthat Republika Srpska would be forced to organise a referendum should hecontinue to impose decisions and laws that were out of his jurisdiction.

"We entered the stage of drawing up the necessary legislation and inthe second half of January we will move to parliament a law on the referendumadjusted to the present time. After the official announcement of the law, wewill make a decision to call a referendum at which we will ask our people ifthey support the Dayton Agreement or if they are against of having the HighRepresentative impose decisions and laws," Dodik said in the interview.

Dodik said that most definitely conditions and mechanisms would be securedfor Republika Srpska to organise a referendum on its status one day, ifnecessary.

He said he had not discussed the referendum with Serbian President BorisTadic.
