Dozens of people, including more than 20 Kosovo police officers, were injured in clashes that erupted between local Serbs and the Kosovo police at the Merdare border crossing on Thursday morning.

According to the Belgrade media, the incident was triggered off when the Kosovo law enforcement officers halted a group of Serbs, using tear gas and rubber bullets, which resulted in the wounding of some 20 civilians.

The Pristina-based media reported that the police halted members of Belgrade's Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) "Delija" fans and that police officers were wounded when those fans threw stones at them.

It was also reported that 24 local police sustained injuries.

The group of soccer club's fans are believed to have been on their way to Gazimestan, Kosovo, to mark the 623rd anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo in which the invading army of the Ottoman Empire under the leadership of Sultan Murad I had defeated the Serbians on 28 June 1389.
