The head of the Delegation of the European Union to Croatia, Ambassador Paul Vandoren, has extended congratulations to Croatian citizens after the Croatian Parliament on Friday unanimously ratified Croatia's Treaty of Accession with the EU.

First, I'd like to congratulate to Croatian citizens on this brilliant success, achieved through their representatives in parliament. Second, I'd like to encourage all Croatians to continue with the preparations for EU membership and should they do that they will make exceptional gain, Vandoren told the press after today's parliamentary session at which deputies ratified the treaty.

This is a great day, Vandoren said.

Under the Accession Treaty, Croatia is expected to join the bloc on 1 July 2013, after all 27 EU member states ratify the treaty.

So far the treaty has been ratified by Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Italy and Malta.
