EU president Denmark has welcomed the outcome of Sunday's referendum in Croatia in which Croatians voted "yes" to their country joining the European Union on July 1, 2013.
"I welcome the positive result of the referendum in Croatia yesterday. The Croatian voters have spoken and they have chosen a future within the EU. With the result, Croatia has taken a further decisive step towards membership. Croatia's path towards the EU is an example for the whole region. It shows that with a committed effort and hard work, membership is within reach," the Danish Minister of European Affairs, Nicolai Wammen, said in a statement on Monday morning.
"Croatia has reached a high level of preparedness for membership. It is now important that the last effort is made to address the remaining issues. The presidency looks forward to welcoming Croatia as the 28th member of the EU pending the successful conclusion of the ratification procedures in the 27 member states," the statement said.
