The festival of new theatre Eurokaz started in Zagreb on Monday evening with a staging of the play "Saloma" by Croatian writer Miroslav Krleza in an unusual venue, the shopping centre Avenue Mall.

The festival, to last until July 5, will feature theatre, dance and muti-media performances by troupes from Great Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, DR Congo and Croatia, a news conference was told earlier in the day.

Performances will be staged in Zagreb's theatres, and some will be staged at the Museum of Modern Art.

The festival includes four performances that are part of a project focusing on the impact of science on performing arts. The project is supported by the European programme Culture 2007-2013 and Eurokaz is one of the partners in it.
