Nevenka Jurak, the owner of the Fimi Media marketing agency through which money from state-owned companies and ministries had been allegedly syphoned off and ended up partially in the HDZ slush funds, arrived at anti-corruption agency USKOK headquarters in Zagreb on Friday morning to be questioned as a suspect.
Jurak arrived at USKOK headquarters shortly before 9AM with her two lawyers Kresimir Vilajtovic and Ivo Farcic. The three declined to address the press.
After the questioning, lawyer Farcic told reporters outside the court that Jurak had given detailed answers to the investigators, adding that there had been no mention of a possible deal.
Jurak again declined to address the press after the interview.
According to unofficial information, after Jurak, USKOK is expected to question another suspect, former accountant of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) Branka Pavosevic.
Damir Sesvecan of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), who represents the party in a current investigation into the HDZ as a legal entity over allegations of party slush funds, and HDZ attorney Vladimir Gredelj, are expected to arrive at USKOK around 1PM.
The USKOK investigation, launched 18 months ago, has recently been expanded to several former HDZ members and officials, on suspicion that part of the money syphoned off through Fimi Media ended up in the alleged HDZ slush funds. USKOK also believes that election campaigns of the HDZ, which has been at the helm of the ruling coalition for the past eights years, had been financed with that money.
The investigation has been expanded to former HDZ president Ivo Sanader, Jurak, Pavosevic, HDZ official Ivan Jarnjak who used to be the party's Secretary General, former spokesman for the party and the government Ratko Macek and to the HDZ party as a legal entity.
Earlier in the investigation Jurak and Pavosevic were placed in investigating custody and the media speculate that owing to their testimonies USKOK had expanded the investigation into the HDZ slush funds.
Earlier this week, Jarnjak and Macek presented their defence to USKOK. Their defence strategy was not revealed to the press.
