President Ivo Josipovic’s stalling with the appointment of ambassadors is unusual given that by doing so he is favouring the Social Democratic Party (SDP), in case this party should win the election and form a new government, Croatian Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Gordan Jandrokovic told Croatian Television on Tuesday evening.

Jandrokovic said that the proposal to appoint ambassadors which the government sent to President Josipovic included career diplomats, professionals and experts. Jandrokovic stressed that although the proposal was sent a month and a half ago, the president had not yet responded, he only said in a radio interview that he would state his position by 15 September.

"SDP president Zoran Milanovic has recently announced that he would appoint some of the ambassadors following the political criteria which would be a step back. In this term, particularly in the past two years, we insisted that ambassadors be career diplomats, professionals and experts, while the SDP would appoint ambassadors following the political criteria, as they did in 2000,” Jandrokovic said.
