Four men suspected of committing war crimes in the Kuline military prison in the coastal city of Sibenik in 1992 have been detained for 48 hours in the Bilice detention facility in Split, a Split County Court investigating judge decided on Thursday.
The four suspects have been unofficially identified as Zeljko Maglov, former commander of the 73rd Military Police Battalion; Tvrtko Pasalic, former chief of the now defunct Security and Intelligence Service in Sibenik; Damir Borsic, former commander of the military detention facility in Sibenik, and Milorad Paic, a former military policeman.
Within the next two days the investigating judge will decide whether he will open a formal investigation or not. If he does, the prosecution will demand that the suspects be detained for 30 days.
The four men are suspected of war crimes against Serb prisoners of war and a civilian.
Media speculate that the former military policemen were responsible for the inhumane treatment of civilians from the village of Nos Kalik, near Drnis, and of a Serb woman prisoner of war. The prosecution reportedly has testimonies of about 20 former inmates of Kuline prison.
