The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) journalist has confirmed the authenticity of the interview Serbia's President-elect Tomislav Nikolic gave for that German newspaper ahead of the 20 May Serbian presidential runoff in which Nikolic declared Vukovar a Serb town.

"There is the audio recording of the interview, if there are still any doubts," the FAZ Southeast Europe and Turkey correspondent Michael Martens told the Croatian national television (HTV) on Saturday evening.

The interview's author Martens said that he could not understand why the Office of Tomislav Nikolic was now claiming that the interview was a lie.

"Then (during the interview) I asked him whether he knew that in Vukovar there are now more Serbs than it was ten or 15 years ago. I said that the Croatians would not come back there but that the Serbs would, and Nikolic replied: 'That's why Vukovar was a Serb town. The Croatians have nothing to do there'," Martens said adding that Nikolic had told him that there was no need for the authorisation of his interview.
