The Croatian government has adopted a decision to call early elections for the mayor of Varazdin and for the municipal head and the deputy municipal head of Sibinj municipality, according to a statement issued after the closed-door part of the government session on Thursday.

The Varazdin city administration on 19 July this year received a letter of resignation from Mayor Ivan Cehok and the Sibinj municipal administration on 11 August this year received a letter of resignation from municipal head Ivica Batinic.

Under the law on the election of municipal heads, mayors, county prefects and the Zagreb City Mayor, if the term in office of those officials ends before its actual expiry, early elections are called.

The government decided that elections for the new mayor of Varazdin and the new head of Sibinj municipality would be held on October 16.

The government adopted a decision on the rotation, number and structure of Croatian Armed Forces' members serving in UN peace missions. In September this year, there will be a rotation of Croatian troops serving in UN peace missions - one Croatian soldier will be deployed to serve in the UN peace mission in Cyprus (UNFICYP) as a military observer until 31 December 2011, and two soldiers will be sent to serve in the UN peace mission in the Golan Heights (UNDOF) until 31 December 2011.

The government also adopted a decision on the establishment of an international group to draw up a national fire protection strategy. The group, to be headed by a representative of the Ministry of the Interior, is to make, until 31 December 2011, a fire protection strategy for the period from 2012 to 2021.
