The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) will demand an early parliamentary election after Croatia joins the European Union because the ruling coalition's election platform has turned out to be a sham, the leader of this strongest opposition party said in a television interview on Sunday evening.

"It has turned out that the coalition's Plan 21 is a deception. Those people are incompetent, inexpert and even overbearing. After accession to the EU, we will demand an early parliamentary election," HDZ president Tomislav Karamarko told the public broadcaster HTV.

In the interview, Karamarko commented on the current state of affairs in the country, the government's economic policy, forthcoming elections for the European Parliament, the expulsion of former HDZ president Jadranka Kosor from the party and the HDZ's ratings in the opinion polls.

He said that in this difficult economic situation it made no sense to focus on the ratings, adding that his party's performance in elections was always better than indicated by opinion polls. He would not discuss Kosor's expulsion, saying that he could not comment on decisions by the party's court of honour that were pending appeal.
