Although Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) President Tomislav Karamarko said last year that as soon as local elections were held he would convene a party election on the principle of 'one member - one vote', the party's presidency on Tuesday concluded that there was no need to do so.
"We discussed this and concluded that there was no reason or need for a party election. A victorious party has no reason for something of this kind and it might be better to see whether the party that lost at the election has any reason to conduct a party election", a member of the HDZ presidency, Gordan Jandrokovic told reporters after the meeting.
He added that the presidency had discussed the results of the recent local elections and concluded the party had reason to be satisfied.
HDZ still considers that once Croatia joins the European Union it is necessary to conduct an early parliamentary election.
"We believe that due to the generally poor situation in Croatia and given the recent elections which have shown that the HDZ has legitimacy and that its support is growing, it is necessary to call an early parliamentary election. Besides, over 700,000 people have expressed their opinion which is in contradiction to the government's, which is also a reason for early polls," said Jandrokovic.
