The vice president of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party, Andrija Hebrang, said on Friday he knew nothing about slush funds from which the HDZ had allegedly been financed and that he believed that party president and Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor knew nothing about their possible existence either.
Hebrang was speaking to the press before entering the government building. Neither he nor HDZ vice presidents Vladimir Seks and Ivan Jarnjak and secretary-general Branko Bacic would say why they had arrived at the Cabinet office.
Asked about the alleged slush funds, Hebrang said, "Not only didn't I know (anything about them), I'm still convinced, since it hasn't been proved, that something like that is impossible. I can't believe that amounts in their millions could have been illegally used like that."
Asked if he believed that Kosor had known nothing either, he said, "Not only do I believe it, I'm sure of it, because when we discuss and reconstruct numerous events, we can't even find a trace of such a parallel system."
Family and Veterans Affairs Minister Tomislav Ivic told the press after a government session he knew nothing about possible slush funds either, "particularly with regard to Osijek Television."
The media reported today that slush funds had been used to pay off some media, including Osijek Television, and in this context mentioned Ivic, who was president of the HDZ's Osijek county branch at the time relevant to the case.
Asked if there would be a government reshuffle, Seks told the press, "We'll see."
