The Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) Programmes Council on Monday again failed to elect a new general director of the national public broadcaster because none of the 18 candidates received the necessary number of votes.
Appointment to the post of HRT director-general requires the two-thirds majority support of the HRT Programmes Council, namely eight votes.
A fourth and final voting round today saw two contenders - acting HRT director-general Josip Popovac and Croatian Radio programmes director Dusko Radic, who each got five votes.
Under current voting rules, if two candidates get the same number of votes, applications for the post of HRT director-general have to be invited again.
The Programmes Council decided to again invite applications for the post, and the invitation will be published in the media after the Council amends rules on the election of the HRT director-general to prevent similar situations from recurring.
The deadline for the submission of applications will be 15 days.
Acting HRT director-general Josip Popovac will remain in that post until a new HRT director-general is elected. Popovac was elected to that post in December 2009, after Vanja Sutlic was relieved of duty. An interim HRT general-director may hold that position for a maximum six months.
