As the 28th member of the European Union, Croatia will contribute to promoting European values that are in danger, especially in the present time of crisis, President Ivo Josipovic said at a ceremony marking Europe Day, held at the National and University Library in Zagreb on Wednesday.

"It is no coincidence that Europe Day is observed on the Day of Victory over Fascism. Fascism and Nazism are ideologies that most negated the values that Europe wishes to build upon. It is therefore one of the main tasks in this time of crisis to ensure that the ghosts of Fascism and Nazism do not threaten democracy, human rights and progress," the President said.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Josip Leko, government ministers, members of Parliament, and foreign diplomats. It was organised by the EU Delegation, whose chief, Ambassador Paul Vandoren, described Croatia as a success story and an example to its neighbours, adding that the EU was welcoming Croatia with open arms as "a new member of our family".
