President Ivo Josipovic has called on the government to think carefully before deciding on the reduction of the monthly subscription fee to the Croatian Radio and Television (HRT).
During a visit to Sisak County on the occasion of County Day on Friday, Josipovic told reporters that "an abrupt cut could be dangerous considering the number of people employed (with the national broadcaster) and expectations from the television".
Josipovic recalled making a final decision on the matter was within the remit of the government and the parliament.
The government on Thursday proposed reducing the subscription fee from HRK 80 to HRK 60, a move that has triggered vociferous criticism from HRT journalists and several associations and political parties.
