The leader of the strongest opposition party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Tomislav Karamarko, said on Friday that he was displeased by the government's decision to give up the construction of the Peljesac bridge as a way of linking the southernmost part of Croatia with the rest of the country in the north.

The present government has given up the plan to overcome the problem of territorial discontinuity by building the Peljesac bridge, which is not just a financial issue but also a transport, economic, security and even psychological issue of the first order. It did so without even conducting a broader discussion on what that bridge would mean for Croatia and for the people of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. There is no reason whatsoever why this country should be divided in two in peacetime, Karamarko said at a press conference in Dubrovnik.

Responding to questions from the press about the resignation of Mirela Holy as the Minister of Environmental and Nature Protection, Karamarko said that the case that showed best that the ruling coalition was making political appointments in state-owned companies and how the government had got rid of many competent personnel.

Karamarko criticised the government's work, saying that he could not see any aspect of it that he could praise and say that it was successful.

Announcing the activities of the HDZ ahead of local elections, scheduled for 2013, he said that the HDZ would achieve much better results than in previous elections.
