Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor confirmed in the southern town of Ploce on Wednesday that she spoke with representatives of major banks in Croatia and Croatian National Bank governor Zeljko Rohatinski, adding that based on these talks the government would soon make a decision whether to tax banks.

"We talked to representatives of the biggest banks in Croatia, but we also talked to governor Rohatinski. Based on these talks, primarily on the talks with governor Rohatinski, we will make the final decisions," Kosor said in response to a reporter's question if the talks focused on the introduction of bank taxes and if she feared that banks could respond by raising interest rates.

Every decision must be well-balanced, Kosor said, adding that not a single decision which could seem very good at first must cause other disruptions.

"We will make this decision very quickly, based on all information available to us and after consultations with government partners," Kosor said.
