The president of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Jadranka Kosor, told the Nova TV commercial television on Wednesday evening she would not back out from the race for party president, although some of the possible candidates were working on that.
"Some of my colleagues who want to announce their candidacy in May want me to withdraw from the race. But I will not quit. Everyone who knows me, also knows that I do not quit. I believe I have something to say in the future of this party as well," Kosor said.
Commenting on a reporter's observation that practically everyone was slowly abandoning her ship, Kosor said she was aware whose support she enjoyed, adding that if the party elections were held today and if each member got to vote, she would most definitely win a landslide victory.
Kosor said if she won the election, there would be room in the HDZ for all her counter-candidates, adding however, that other candidates indicated that in the event of their victory there would be no room for her.
Asked if, as HDZ president, she felt responsible for the present situation in the party, Kosor said that "the party leadership, namely the people running the HDZ, were always responsible for the situation in the party."
