According to a census conducted in April, Kosovo has 1,733,872 inhabitants, the Bureau of Statistics in Pristina said on Wednesday.

These are preliminary results and the final ones will be released next year. The data does not include the municipalities in the north of the country mostly populated by Serbs, who boycotted the census, asking that Serbia conduct it.

The capital of Pristina has a population of 198,214.

The previous census, in which all ethnic communities took part, was conducted in 1981, when Kosovo had a population of 1,584,440.

According to estimates in 1991, Kosovo had 1,956,196 inhabitants. That census was organised by the Serbian authorities, who imposed measures in Kosovo, and was boycotted by the Albanian population.

According to Kosovo's Bureau of Statistics, the constant emigration of Kosovars to European countries is the result of the fact that Kosovo has less than two million inhabitants.

According to the latest census, about 700,000-850,000 Kosovars live abroad.
