Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu resigned on Monday after the Constitutional Court ruled that he breached the constitution by remaining in office as president of the Democratic Alliance of Kosovo party.
Sejdiu announced his decision to resign at a press conference in Pristina, saying he had been convinced that by remaining party leader, although not an active one, he was not breaching the constitution.
He added, however, that he must honour the Constitutional Court's decision.
The Kosovo president is elected in parliament. In case of resignation or death, he is provisionally replaced by the parliament speaker, in this case Jakup Krasniqi. The president's term of office lasts five years.
Sejdiu was re-elected president in January 2008. He had been elected for the first time after the death of Ibrahim Rugova.
Kosovo's Constitutional Court decided on Friday that Sejdiu had gravely breached the constitution by remaining in office as president of the republic and president of the DSK party.
