Former government spokesman Ratko Macek told the Zagreb County Court on Friday that all decisions made by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) presidency had been adopted unanimously after debates on matters, including decisions to amend the INA shareholders' agreement with Hungary's MOL which enabled the Hungarians to take over a controlling interest in the national Croatian oil and gas group.

"I can't remember any HDZ session, and I attended all of them from 2003 to 2009, at which conclusions were not adopted unanimously always after debates," Macek said at the trial of Ivo Sanader for whom the witness used to be the spokesman.

Former Croatian Prime Minister and HDZ leader Sanader is charged with allegedly taking 10 million euros in reward for enabling Hungary's MOL to have a dominant position in INA through the 2009 amendment of the shareholders' agreement and for planning to ensure that INA gets rid of the loss-making gas business.

As for the HDZ presidency sessions, the witness Macek said that the party president had been the moderator who had allowed other party members to express their positions and that all decisions had been "the fruit of debates".

Macek said that the presidency of the HDZ that had been the ruling party at that time, had separately voted on the amending of the shareholders' agreement and on the divestiture of the gas business.

"Divesting the gas business was a particularly sensitive issue. It is known how it was with supplying the gas from Ukraine and with threats of having gas prices skyrocketing on the market," Macek said adding that he could not remember exactly what had been discussed but that he could remember that it was most important to protect Croatia's interests, gas business and to maintain the gas price.

He also recalled the then Deputy Prime Minister Damir Polancec having presented the draft amendments to the agreement with MOL before the debates by the HDZ presidency, adding that the topic had been discussed on three occasions.

Macek said he had been present at the HDZ presidency's meetings also after he left the cabinet of PM Sanader, as a guest and public relations expert.
