The president of the strongest opposition party, Zoran Milanovic of the Social Democrats (SDP), told the Nova TV commercial television on Thursday evening that the opposition does not plan to topple the government, but to dissolve parliament, which is scheduled to be dissolved soon anyhow, and to point to the intolerable behaviour in parliament.

Representatives of the four parties that make up the centre-left opposition coalition, led by the SDP, earlier today announced they would no longer participate in the work of the Croatian Parliament.

They said that their move was prompted by the behaviour of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and the damage it was doing to the dignity and reputation of Parliament.

"We did that to point to the intolerable behaviour, style and content and to what happened at the session of the Credentials and Privileges Commission which breaks trust of Croatian citizens," Milanovic told Nova TV.

He dismissed claims that without the opposition in parliament there can be no quorum, saying that the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) has the majority in parliament, which means they also have quorum.

He said that given that the parliamentary elections would be held on 4 December, the date also confirmed by the HDZ, he saw no reason for the present situation in parliament to last another 10 days.

Milanovic stressed the opposition would most definitely show up in parliament once its dissolution is listed on the agenda, saying that the opposition would advocate that the parliament be dissolved as soon as possible.
