The head of Croatia's strongest opposition party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Zoran Milanovic, said on Saturday that the key problem of forthcoming elections was to recognise "who is telling the truth and who is blowing smoke into the eyes of voters."

"The SDP has no interest groups behind it and no debts," Milanovic told a convention of the party's branch in the coastal city of Zadar, stressing that the only obligation the SDP had was to citizens of Croatia.

Milanovic said that no one in Croatia was happy with the present situation, that people were hungry for justice, and that regions, such as Dalmatia, never had a better chance for social and economic development.

"A generation that fails to seize such an opportunity is a generation that is missing a historic opportunity," Milanovic said.
