Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic held a brief news conference in the government's offices on Sunday afternoon following the news of the death of Parliament Speaker Boris Sprem, and on that occasion the premier described Sprem as "a honorable man and a fighter who had a successful life and who was sometimes naive like a child and an idealist".

"There are few people like him that I know," Milanovic said.

"Sprem has been a special man. He was diagnosed with (cancer) a more than year ago and he was confident all the time that he would recover. Unfortunately, life is such," Milanovic said.

Sprem, who suffered from multiple myeloma, died at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston on early Sunday morning, Central European Time, the Croatian parliament reported on Sunday morning. Sprem went to the MD Anderson Cancer Center on August 23.
