Social Democratic Party (SDP) president Zoran Milanovic said on Tuesday evening that the election programme of the SDP-led coalition did not provide for an arrangement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"There's no IMF in our programme. Why? Because we want to decide on important matters on our own," Milanovic told the public television network HTV when asked whether the centre-left coalition, if it won the December 4 election, would invite the IMF to Croatia.

Milanovic thus dismissed the statement by his party colleague, Slavko Linic, that, if possible, they would call in the IMF so that they could get funds at more favourable rates and set aside money for investment.

"There are people among us who are simply stunned when they see the deficit," Milanovic said.

Commenting on Linic's statement, Economy Minister Djuro Popijac said that some members of the centre-left coalition would like to see the IMF in Croatia while the others were distancing themselves from such a proposal. "They actually don't know what they want," he said.
