First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Radimir Cacic on Monday said that he had never heard that anyone ever suggested that ministers should work for a minimum salary for 60 days whereas Minister of Labour and Pension System Mirando Mrsic said that he would be prepared to do so.
"I haven't heard anything about such an idea and I'm sure that is not what the minister thought", Cacic said responding to journalists about an alleged proposal put forward by Finance Minister Slavko Linic to cover 'gaps' in the budget by putting the government and ministries on a two-month minimum salary.
It is not a matter of being ready to accept it or not. People work for a minimum salary. We are here to work and communicate messages. It is up to the government to decide on salaries, Minister Mrsic said at a press conference about active employment policies in Croatia prior to joining the European Union.
Articles appeared in the Jutarnji List daily on Monday stating that the government wanted to set an example of austerity and was considering putting ministers and other officials on a minimum salary for two months.
