Police are intensively searching for vandals who pulled out a monument on the Rijeka wharf honouring Pope John Paul II's visit to that city in 2003.
Unidentified perpetrators pulled out the monument in the shape of a bollard and threw it into the sea on Sunday night. The symbolic bollard, which was slightly damaged, was dragged up from the bottom of the sea by divers and taken over by city authorities.
The monument, honouring the 10th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's visit to Rijeka, was erected in June this year on the wharf on the spot where the Pope first stepped onto Rijeka soil.
