The motion to initiate the procedure for a referendum on the Croatia-Slovenia border arbitration agreement was submitted on Monday in the Slovenian 90-seat parliament, being supported by signatures of 86 lawmakers.
Thus, a seven-day deadline began running for the parliament's presidency to call the referendum at which eligible Slovenian voters can opt for supporting the parliament's ratification of the arbitration agreement which Slovenian and Croatian Prime Ministers, Borut Pahor and Jadranka Kosor signed in Stockholm on 4 November 2009.
Croatia's parliament ratified the document later that November, while Slovenian MPs did it on 19 April this year.
However, Slovenian lawmakers also decided to hold the referendum on the matter, which is likely to take place on 6 June.
The referendum question will be "Are you in favour of the enforcement of the law on the ratification of the arbitration agreement between the governments of Slovenia and Croatia, which parliament passed at its session on 19 April 2010?
Opinion polls that have been conducted so far show that a majority of Slovenians are for the agreement. In case that Slovenians, however, reject the ratification law, this issue cannot be on the parliament's agenda in next 12 months.
