A survey conducted by the on-line job search portal posao.hr shows that close to 70 percent of Croatians want to find a second job to help them cover their basic living costs, around 76 percent are willing to work additionally during their holidays, and 89 percent are willing to accept a job that is below their intellectual and professional abilities if paid well.
The survey, conducted in June, covered 1,254 respondents aged 25-34, mostly from Zagreb and Zagreb County.
The results show that despite the great interest in earning additional income, only 12 percent of the respondents had a second (part-time) job.
Forty-three percent of the respondents said they were dissatisfied with their income, only six percent were satisfied, and four percent were not receiving a salary for their work.
Thirty-five percent of the respondents said their income was sufficient to cover only their basic living costs such as the cost of housing and food.
One-fifth of the respondents said their income could not even cover those basic living costs, and only three percent said their income was sufficient to cover all their living costs.
The main motive for finding a second job was additional income (55%), gaining new experience (23%), learning something new (18%), and entertainment (4%).
As many as 70 percent of the respondents wanted to earn additional income, but were unsuccessful in finding a second job.
On the other hand, 25 percent of the respondents considering a second job said they were not doing anything concrete to find it.
The respondents came from the sectors of information science, administration, economy, electrotechnical engineering and science, most of them (38%) being people with high school qualifications.
