The Independent Croatian Unions (NHS) on Thursday said in a press release that the latest decision by the government to increase salaries for some officials once again showed that the government believes that it is above the people, the union's leader Kresimir Sever said.
The government is advocating austerity measures and cutting salaries and material rights for public servants while at the same time it is amending legislation to secure officials' jobs once their terms in office are over as well as creating new officials and raising salaries for some selected officials, NHS's press release says.
Sever noted that the government justified the latest pay increase for officials because they would have an important role and more responsibilities in upcoming reforms and obligations related to Croatia's EU entry, yet public servants that will have do the work in this case are having their salaries cut as a vital austerity measure.
The government is acting like powerful multinationals which pay the management boards of their companies in Croatia well as long as they are obedient and if not, they are quickly left without a job and their good salaries, the NHS press release says.
