There are no Croatian citizens among the arrested foreign mercenaries who fought in military units loyal to the regime of Colonel Muammar Gadaffi, the Croatian foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration has received a note from the Libyan Embassy in Zagreb confirming that, following checks with the Libyan authorities, among the arrested foreigners who fought in military units of the Gaddafi regime there are no Croatian citizens nor have there been any before," the statement said.
Speaking on behalf of the National Transitional Council, the Libyan Embassy emphasised the interest of new Libya in deepening the existing friendly relations between Libya and Croatia. In its note, the Embassy once again thanked Croatia for taking a positive stance towards the revolution in Libya, recognising the National Transitional Council and extending aid and support to the Libyan people.
The member of the Libyan National Transitional Council in charge of justice, Mohammed al-Alagy, said about a month ago that among the people arrested in Libya there were a lot of foreigners, including 17 Croats.
