Ombudswoman for gender equality Visnja Ljubicic said in a statement on Monday that "the decision of the City of Split concerning the change of the agreed route of the Split Pride march on 9 June is in violation of the Law on Gender Equality and represents direct discrimination based on sexual orientation.
The city authorities decided earlier today that the final event of Split Pride 2012 would be held in the city's square (Prokurative) and not at the waterfront, as it was the case last year.
"According to the media, this decision was not made for security reasons, but it is based on complaints of citizens' associations and their homophobic positions. Such discriminatory positions must not limit constitutional rights to freedom of assembly and freedom of expression to any group of citizens," the statement said.
