Businessman Davor Patafta, who is suspected of municipal land fraud together with Varadzin mayor Ivan Cehok, was released from Remetinec Prison in Zagreb shortly after 1600 hours on Tuesday after posting 12 million kuna (1.6 million euros) bail, the highest bail in Croatian judicial history.
Patafta was granted provisional release after paying two million kuna in cash and 10 million kuna in bills of exchange and promising that he would not hide or obstruct the proceedings and would attend court hearings.
Patafta declined to speak to the press. One of his lawyers, Ante Madunic, said that he was pleased that his client was released, but that he was also angry because his assets and bank accounts were frozen. He added that Patafta himself had insisted on a high bail amount.
